Chapter Twenty-Six
Talon had used every reserve to keep up with Meka’s sure strides through the forest to Cian. He could have asked for help through the really tough bits—he would have if it had been Grigor walking next to him—but Uncle Tao’s light-haired son was not like his volatile but open-faced brother.
Meka was an enigma. And Talon didn’t trust enigmas. Although Meka denied it, Talon was convinced the boy was hiding stuff from him. Important stuff that affected him, or why else was Meka so cagey? So uncomfortably guarded.
Far from even achieving the friendship he’d hoped for with Meka, Talon now even doubted the wisdom of sharing the book with him. It was only the urgent need to know what it contained that overrode his reluctance.
He pulled his hair over his eyes so he could watch Meka unnoticed as they loped along the road to the gate into Cian. Meka looked so much like Uncle Tao that it hurt.
It didn’t seem right; Meka was nothing like him. At this point, all Talon had to go on were Cricket and Grigor’s assurances about Meka’s trustworthiness.
Cricket was dead, and given his history with the dead, he wasn’t disposed to trusting her. If she and Dmitri really were on his side, they would have been more helpful. As for Grigor, it had been some time since he’d seen Meka, who could have changed.
How did the book fit in? Grigor and Natalia—two people Talon did trust—seemed genuinely moved by it. It rankled that he couldn’t read it himself.
Your own fault. Mom and Uncle Tao tried to teach you.
Also, it still niggled that Meka had been wearing a cloak when he’d entered the prison with Felix. Why had it been necessary to hide Meka’s face if he had been a real prisoner? Was it possible that Meka actually worked for Felix? Was it possible that this was all an elaborate trap?
Talon had refused to play along in the Dmitri Curse game. Was this a trap Dmitri supported in order to punish him for it? A trap that would spring when they reached the harbor?
While all this distrust existed, Talon had no intention of going anywhere near the harbor with Meka.
All these fears were complicated by his need to use Meka to get to Treven. Not to mention the crippling guilt that sent hot and cold shivers through him every time he thought about Valeria. He had failed her, yet he still expected help from Meka.
Talon scolded himself. His behavior was unjust on a grand scale. It would serve him right if the Winds punished him through Meka’s betrayal.
They reached the gates of the city as the watery sun clipped the city skyline. Meka kept his head down to hide his diamond until they passed the guardsmen. There was nothing he could do about his Norin hair, but the guardsmen probably thought he was a performer.
Once clear of the gate, they lumbered past the dilapidated houses and their brow-beaten owners on the route to Talon’s hideout.
A Dreaded leaped out from nowhere.
